Keeping Physically Healthy During Lockdown

While many of us are confined to our homes, it can be easy to neglect our physical health. This article provides some general advice and suggestions on exercise. Please seek advice from a medical expert if you have any physical health conditions which may impact on your ability to exercise safely.

General Advice

  • Make sure you are eating healthily and regularly.
  • Keep yourself hydrated and drink water regularly.
  • Get as much sunlight, fresh air and nature as you can.
  • Exercise is good for the mind and body and can improve your mood, especially when you are feeling low or anxious.

Gentle Exercise & Light Activity

It’s a good idea to try to get outside and catch some sunshine if you can (unless you are being shielded). The current regulations allow for a daily walk, or to go running/cycling.  These restrictions may be altered in the coming weeks.

If you are confined to your home, do try to keep active and not stay seated in the same position for too long

If nothing else, it is a good idea to at least stand and stretch, or shift your seated position. NHS have some suggestions for gentle exercise and light activity, depending on your age.

Light Activity

There are lots of different ways that you can exercise from home. NHS Live Well list some examples of light activity:

  • Light activity is moving rather than sitting or lying down.
  • Examples of light activity include:
  • getting up to make a cup of tea
  • moving around your home
  • walking at a slow pace
  • cleaning and dusting
  • vacuuming
  • making the bed
  • standing up

You may be able to identify other physical activities which you can carry out in the home.
